A Tale of Two Upgrades

Let me tell you a story of two upgrades.
Upgrade Number 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had been using MaxiPlan V2.7 for about 8 months when I received a phone
call from DataFlow telling me that there was now available a version 4. I
was given a contact number and name which I called. The upgrade would cost
me $79.95 and I had to return my original disk with a cheque or money order
or credit card details. It was a Sydney suburb which meant there would be
no messy conversions into US dollars etc. All went smoothly. I had been
told to allow 3 weeks for delivery, which I accepted as being reasonable.
Imagine my surprise, when two weeks later I attended the World of
Commodore to discover that the upgrade cost was not $79.95 but only $73. I
rang the Disc Company the following monday to find out what the story was.
At first they could find no record of my upgrade and called me back two
days later to inform me that yes I'd been quoted the wrong amount. They
would include a cheque to reinburse me the difference. Quite reasonable I
thought and was happy.
One week later nothing had arrived in the post. Being a little concerned
I called again only to be told that they were waiting for the cheque to be
cleared before they despatched the goods. This took another week before
the cheque appeared on my bank statement.
It is now seven weeks since I sent the original disk off, and still I have
not received anything. I called again this week and was told, yes that's
the one which had the payment of $79.95. No they did not know what had
happened as the person handling it had returned to the US. Yes they would
get onto it straight away. I am getting tired of waiting. The delays are
quite unacceptable for a commercial professional company. I'll be very
loath in future to recommend them to others or even to purchase further
upgrades. One can only hope that they get better.
Upgrade Number 2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been using QuarterBack ever since purchasing my Hard Drive, and on
numerous occasions it has saved my bacon. At the World of Commodore Show I
had an opportunity to road test the latest version, and was suitably
impressed. My only reservation about upgrading was that I had to send the
original disk back to the US and arrange for payment in US dollars.
After scouting around all the major software dealers the cheapest I could
get a full copy for was $99. The upgrade cost was US$35 which after
exchange rate conversion and bank charges rose to $54. Still cheaper than
buying a full copy. So I arranged for the bank cheque and sent the disk
off to the US.
Today I received a package from the US. It had taken 10 days, not bad for
international mail, plus I'd been given the latest version, which
supposedly has had a few bugs removed. I was impressed with the speed New
Horizons answered my mail.

I am still waiting for The Disc Company to supply me with my upgrade of
MaxiPlan V4.0. Somewhat annoying when you consider that the companies
office is about 15 minutes drive, no more than 20 kms, from my home.
Hang on! the programme has just been delivered. Only 7 weeks and 3 days
since I sent the initial disk off. My joy and jubilation are short lived
however as the programme has a major bug. The palette requestor will guru
if you drag the slider. Oh well I'll report this bug and find out if they
are aware if it, there may be a bug fix. Five days and three phone calls
later I manage to get someone in tech support to answer my query. Really
this is just not good enough.
I did not receive my refund cheque either. Oh well.
To say that I'm annoyed, frustrated, and fed up, would be an
understatement. I think this will be the last time I upgrade MaxiPlan,
unless their support and upgrades improves out of sight. Unfortunately I
doubt it.
